Ilmastoestäminen Suomessa – Ilmastopolitiikan vastustamisen strategiat, diskurssit ja koalitiot Suomessa 1990-luvulta nykypäivään, tuttavallisemmin ILMEST, on Koneen säätiön rahoittama kolmivuotinen tutkimushanke, jossa tutkitaan ilmastopolitiikan vastustamisen strategioita ja diskursseja 1990-luvun alusta nykypäivään. Miten ilmastopolitiikkaa kyseenalaistetaan tai viivytellään Suomessa?

Tutkimalla elinkeinoelämän, perussuomalaisen puolueen ja eri alojen ilmastoasiantuntijoiden ilmastovaikuttamista selvitämme, miten ilmastopolitiikkaa on vastustettu eri aikoina ja millaisia ilmastopoliittisia koalitioita ilmastoestämisen välityksellä muodostuu. Ilmastopolitiikka herättää kasvavaa vastustusta. Entistä harvemmin kyse on ilmastodenialismista. Sen sijaan vastustus ilmenee monimutkaisena ilmastoestämisenä: julkisina puhetapoina ja poliittisena vaikuttamisena, joiden tarkoituksena on viivyttää ilmastotoimia.

Tutkimus on kuitenkin toistaiseksi painottunut ilmastodenialismiin tai yksittäisten ilmastokriittisten toimijoiden julkisten diskurssien analysointiin. Viemme ilmastoestämisen tutkimusta rohkeasti eteenpäin tarkastelemalla ilmastoestämistä pitkällä aikavälillä ja tutkimalla rinnakkain kolmea keskeistä ilmastopoliittista toimijaryhmää. Yhdistämällä uudella tavalla määrällisiä ja laadullisia menetelmiä hanke selvittää ensinnäkin, miten elinkeinoelämä, perussuomalaiset ja ilmastoasiantuntijat pyrkivät vaikuttamaan ilmastopolitiikkaan Suomessa.

Toiseksi hanke tutkii, miten ilmastoestämisen diskurssit muokkaantuvat talouden, politiikan ja tieteen kontekstien välillä ja millaisia ilmastopolitiikan suuntaa määrittäviä koalitioita niiden ympärille muodostuu. Hanke analysoi monipuolisia aineistoja alkaen eduskunta- ja media-aineistoista jatkuen aina elinkeinoelämän arkistoihin sekä perussuomalaisten vaikuttajien ja ilmastoasiantuntijoiden haastatteluihin.

Hanke auttaa ymmärtämään, miten ilmastoestämisen diskurssit syntyvät ja valtavirtaistuvat ja miten ne hankaloittavat ilmastotoimien toteuttamista. Ilmastotoimijoille hanke antaa eväitä tunnistaa ja välttää ilmastoestämistä omassa toiminnassaan.
